GunShotLocating LLP, part of the Bloomfield Group, working with the Safer Birmingham Partnership on ‘Project Safe and Sound’, is proud to have installed highly sophisticated Gun Shot Detection technology aimed at improving public safety for communities within Birmingham.

The technology will enable a faster and more efficient response to firearms incidents, providing the community with more effective policing. Speed of deployment to a crime scene will be increased, thus benefiting the community by saving money and lives.

Police will be alerted about the time and origin of shots fired prior to officers arriving at the scene, which maximises the effectiveness and safety of officers and the public at large.

The Shotspotter ‘GLS’ technology is in use in 57 US cities, where it has played a significant role in reducing gun crime and bringing offenders to justice.   The system uses high-tech communications technology, which is able to pinpoint the location of gunshots to within a 25 metre radius.

Birmingham is the first UK city to benefit from this revolutionary system and is now leading the way in gun crime reduction in the UK.

Kirsty Hobson, Director Marketing from GSL said, “We are delighted that months of hard work with SBP & WMP has come together, this sophisticated technology will hugely benefit the community of Birmingham to reduce gun crime, minimise police response times and save lives!’

Please see the link below for coverage of the system on national BBC News including video footage.

The Bloomfield Group is very pleased to announce a new member.

GunShotLocating LLP joins the group bringing unique expertise to the UK and Europe which you will undoubtedly hear about in the media over the next few weeks.

GunShotLocating survey, specify, project manage, install, commission, monitor and service Europe’s first acoustic gunfire detection system installed in an area of Birmingham.

The system uses passive acoustic sensors to detect the sound of gunfire and then, by triangulation processing it plots on a map precisely where the gunfire occurred.  This information is transmitted to a police control room enabling personnel to see where the incident occurred on an interactive map so that an armed response team and paramedics can be quickly dispatched to that location. This rapid response should lead to a greater capture rate and, it is hoped, lives saved, as the Ambulance service will not be delayed by relying on members of the public to call it in.

Already installed in over 50 cities in the USA and other countries worldwide it is truly tried and tested and is so accurate that it has been known to lead the police to the discarded shell casings lying on the ground. The system differentiates gunfire from fireworks and car back firing, and it can also give an indication of the type of weapon fired, the severity of the incident, as well as the sequence in which the shootings took place.

It is expected that other authorities will soon follow the example set by the West Midlands Police and Safer Birmingham Partnership, so watch this space as our inner cities become safer places to be.

Most companies that have any dealings with our sister company REMAS will know we like to be at the forefront of technology and this latest installation is no different.

Working for one of the utilities in Northern Ireland they have installed one of the worlds most advanced RADAR detection systems which we have integrated with the new Predator high speed pan and tilt CCTV cameras.

In short, the RADAR continually scans the entire perimeter of the multi-acre site, it is set through software to only detect up to the fence line, regardless of the site shape and size. When the RADAR detects a human sized object (it will detect but ignore everything else) it sends real time coordinates to the Predator cameras which turn and zoom to the desired location. The camera then locks on and literally tracks the intruder wherever they go.

Once a detection is validated by the RADAR software system it is transmitted to REMAS Global Monitoring (RGM, another Bloomfield Group member) where an operator will view the live CCTV images (still being controlled by the RADAR) and audibly challenge the intruder to ensure they leave the site PRIOR to a crime being committed.

Utilising the latest infra-red emitting LEDs the Predator easily illuminates what ever it looks at to a distance of some 100 metres and as the RADAR works regardless of light conditions, this is truly a “round the clock” security solution.

A forward thinking Water Utility has decided to invest in multiple REMAS Deployable Units, the NAS, giving them the ability to deploy these units to any trouble spots that occur across their large site portfolio.  This gives Anglian Water not only a deployable security utility but also an effective management tool to provide crucial information remotely.

REMAS surveyed the site and in discussions with the local engineer identified the strategic assets to be protected. REMAS then provided Anglian Water with a detailed specification with photographs and plans showing precisely where the NAS and associated detection was to be located.

The NAS has been coupled with 8 wireless detectors placed strategically around the Sewage Treatment Works that report back to the NAS when movement is detected. The NAS then turns and zooms to the area of detection whilst simultaneously transmitting the images to the REMAS Global Monitoring (RGM) dark-screen response service. The RGM Operator can then audibly challenge the intruder before a crime is committed.

The only cabling required on site was a power feed to the NAS as the detectors run on 2-year batteries and the communications are all wifi and cellular.

Anglian Water is the first to install the latest Infra-Red version of the NAS allowing it to see clearly in total darkness to a distance of some 90 metres.  Steve Jones, Anglian Water’s Asset Engineering Manager responsible for the site, declared the installation of the NAS to be “an unmitigated success” as the site in question was being hit by thieves on a weekly basis but has enjoyed a theft free period since the remotely monitored NAS was installed in July 2010.

The Bloomfield Group is made up of Security Design Centre Ltd. (SDC), Remote Management and Security Ltd. (REMAS), REMAS Global Monitoring LLP (RGM) and REMAS Deployable Systems LLP (RDS). The Directors are currently involved in forming another partnership that we will blog about once it is finalised but we are very excited about the prospect as it will be a European first and bring even more cutting edge technology to the already market leading Bloomfield Group.

So what do the different parts do?

SDC survey, install, commission and service all manner of electronic surveillance equipment including CCTV, Access Control, Intruder Alarms and intercom systems typically within 50 miles of Birmingham unless a client has multiple buildings, in which case they go further afield.

REMAS do the same as SDC but on a European scale having sites all over the UK from Stornoway to the Channel Islands and from Northern Ireland to Portugal, Spain and Germany. REMAS, by its very name “remote” tends to install far more remotely monitored CCTV systems giving its clients eyes on all their sites without having to leave their desks. REMAS also installs and services gates, barriers, fencing, Radar Detection and deployable CCTV systems.

RGM was setup due to The Bloomfield Group’s frustration with “run of the mill” monitoring centre’s inability to deal with anything deemed “outside the box”. RGM is a BS8418 monitoring facility hidden in the heart of England offering unparalleled levels of service and care to all its customers. RGM is re-writing the way remote monitoring should be done.

RDS was again setup by the Bloomfield Group due to it’s frustrations but this time it’s frustrations were with supposedly “off the shelf” deployable CCTV systems. Sadly the reality of such systems were that they are not off the shelf and are not particularly deployable. The Bloomfield Group used expertise from all its member Companies to create the Network Accessible Surveillance system (NAS). Truly wireless other than power, truly deployable, truly feature rich and truly amazing value for money. RDS is now working on project “Baby NAS” so watch this space and we will blog about it in due course.

Because of the success that REMAS have experienced with their Deployable System, the NAS, that not only gives a 36:1 zoom fully functional camera, but also has built in wireless radio detection and audio.  The latest version now incorporates infra red allowing the unit to be used in total darkness with an effective range of over 90meters.

Selling at circa £500 more than the standard NAS, it has been noted that fitting a NAS, even in a permanent situation, has become more cost effective than fitting standard CCTV with seperate illumination. As the NAS needs only mains power the savings are in civils and labour that are simply not necessary.

Thanks to GJD’s connections with South Africa, a Senior Government Minister has purchased the REMAS/GJD Wireless Deployable Unit, the NAS (Network Accessible Surveillance), to be used to enhance their security.  For those that don’t know, REMAS is also owned by Security Design Centre’s owners The Bloomfield Group.

The NAS  will be evaluated in the next few weeks and it is anticipated that this unit will be used widely in South Africa and in other countries that require an instant CCTV Surveillance System. IFSEC 2010 certainly stirred up a lot of interest in the NAS with countries from Czech Republic to Northern Ireland registering an interest.

Because of the demands placed on university campus where often there are functions taking place that require extra security, a major university in the East Midlands has invested in the ground breaking NAS (Network Accessible Surveillance) system to help enhance their security during major functions. The instantly deployable CCTV system will respond to wireless alarms and wirelessly transmit live video to the on-site control room where security can audibly challenge the perpetrator using the inbuilt wireless PA (Personal Address) system. In the event of a power failure the NAS will continue to operate for up to 2 hours on its inbuilt UPS Battery Backup system and even if the communications and receiving centre fail, the NAS will hold multiple weeks of recorded footage on its inbuilt digital video recorder.

We'll be watching you... and speaking to you if you get too close...

REMAS, sister company to Security Design Centre Ltd, are very proud to unveil the Network Accessible Surveillance (NAS) deployable CCTV system. Already installed at a major University and being rolled out with two seperate utility companies REMAS is very excited that local councils are now beating the door down due to the NAS being extremely cost effective  whilst being built to an extremely high standard. The “no options” fully loaded NAS has proven itself to be a market beater in truly rapid deployment CCTV and can be monitored by most CCTV monitoring stations in the UK.
