Planning Your Security

Making that all-important decision to safeguard your premises is the start of a complex process of design, planning and installation that will meet both your expectations and budget. Choosing the right level of security may well prove a sound investment for the future, so it pays to take professional advice and get it right from the outset. The ten-point plan adopted by SDC and REMAS is designed to cover every eventuality and provide the most cost-efficient security planning system in the business. Here’s how it works:

  1. A qualified surveyor first visits the site to carry out a detailed risk assessment. He will identify the key areas of potential security breaches where protection is required. His assessment will also take into account the general Health & Safety aspect in relation to installation on site.
  2. Digital photographs are taken of the intended locations of equipment. These will be used in conjunction with the specification and proposals that will be discussed with the client.
  3. Appropriate maintenance schedules are formulated for inclusion in the overall security budget.
  4. Using advanced computer-aided design software developed by the company, engineers prepare a detailed installation plan of the site. This will include ariel photography to highlight specific protection ranges around the site.
  5. The entire system is tailored to suit the agreed budget and summary costs, detailing installed system, testing and commissioning. Estimate costing for cabling has to be calculated accurately, particularly where fibre optics are concerned. If appropriate, the client may be offered an optional cost-saving report where, for instance, manned guarding could be used to good effect with electronic back-up.
  6. Once approved the Project Engineer conducts an in-depth project review with the client and determines key installation dates and procedures. Prior to attendance on site, detailed Health & Safety requirements and method statements are produced in line with industry standards.
  7. On the agreed date the Company’s installation team begins work, keeping disruption to client’s working practices to a minimum.
  8. With the security system in place the Commissioning Engineer carries out final tests and provides any necessary training for client staff. All documentation is handed over to the client together with NSI Certification, the client’s guarantee for insurance purposes.
  9. The SDC or REMAS Service Desk follows up completion of installation with a telephone call to ensure the client is satisfied with the project.
  10. Every installation site receives an annual preventive maintenance visit. The system is tested and checked thoroughly, with adjustments being carried out as necessary. Any parts or equipment showing signs of wear and tear are replaced as required. Major site installations are generally subject to 3 or 6 monthly in-house review meetings to report back on follow-up visits by the company’s Engineering Department and to issue Quality Performance Survey documents.
